76. The Balloonfest ’86 Catastrophe
Year: 1986
Location: Cleveland
Company: Balloon Art by Treb
Estimated Damage Value: $3.2 million*
In 1985, Treb Heining and friends thought releasing over 1.5 million balloons over Cleveland would be brilliant, setting a world record and raising charity funds. However, they didn’t foresee the balloons causing chaos, landing in lakes due to weather changes.

During Balloonfest ’86, the mass balloon release led to two fishermen going missing, their search impeded by balloons. They were found deceased, sparking a lawsuit against the organizers for $3.2 million. Additionally, a $100,000 lawsuit followed from a horse owner citing damage.
