In 1974, Chicago’s Aon Center emerged as a marvel cloaked in 43,000 Italian Carrara marble slabs. Designed by Edward Durell Stone and developed by Standard Oil of Indiana, this novel aesthetic quickly showcased flaws, prompting a costly dilemma.

A hefty marble slab plummeted from the Aon Center, hinting at future calamities. Despite early omens, construction persevered. By 1988, severe cladding cracks surfaced. A $80 million overhaul with granite was unavoidable, transforming the skyscraper’s facade by 1992.
