58. The Tragic Collapse of the Savar Building
Year: 2013
Location: Bangladesh
Company: Sohel Rana (Lead builder)
Estimated Damage Value: Unknown
In 2013, the Savar Building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, tragically collapsed, claiming 1,134 lives and injuring 2,500 others. The disaster, taking a month for rescue fulfillment, was the result of business magnate Sohel Rana’s illegal construction practices and exploitation.

In 2006, Sohel Rana constructed the ill-fated Plaza. Following an explosion in April 2013, despite warnings from an engineer for evacuation, Rana prohibited workers from leaving. The ensuing collapse led to murder charges against Rana, with his trial ongoing.
